October 2008 Edition

CURRENT NEWS

September has come and gone and production on Christopher R. Mihm's newest film, "Terror from Beneath the Earth," continues! Along with the director, stars Elizabeth Kaiser, Michael Kaiser, Elliott Mihm and Dan Sjerven have spent countless hours building the "Wisawa Caves," the main set for the film. The papier-mâché cavern took forty pounds of flour, six months of Sunday papers (plus ads), more cardboard than was kept track of (which is to say, A LOT), a full bolt of paper and three gallons of paint. The crew are within days of completion, with principal photography to begin shortly thereafter!

The 2008 ShockerFest International Film Festival nominations were recently announced and "Cave Women on Mars" is up for two awards: "Best Sci-Fi Feature" (which "It Came From Another World!" won last year) and the "Larry Stanley 'B' Movie Award!" The first-ever "Larry Stanley 'B' Movie Award" is being given in honor of the memory of the founder of PenguinComics.net. Although their names were suggested to the selection committee by writer/director Christopher R. Mihm, Dan Sjerven (Lt. Elliott) and Alana Bloom (Orla) were, unfortunately, not nominated for awards this year.

Lastly, October has traditionally been great for screenings, and this month is no exception. In addition to the cooler-than-cool Stardust Drive-In Sci-Fi Weekend Triple Feature screenings of "The Monster of Phantom Lake," "It Came From Another World!," and "Cave Women on Mars," (have we mentioned that yet?) "Cave Women on Mars" will screen at the 2008 Jack-O-Lantern Jaunt in Mukwonago, Wisconsin (home of the real Phantom Lake). The Jack-O-Lantern Jaunt is an annual charity event where Field Park (essentially the town's "Central Park") is decorated by hundreds of carved, lit pumpkins placed along the walking path that runs through it. "Cave Women on Mars" will be screened "drive-in style" in the middle of the park. Bring your own seating! Admission is only $1.00 per person and the proceeds go to good local causes. This is the third year in a row one of writer/director Christopher R. Mihm's films has been featured at this event.

CLASSIC MOVIE OF THE MONTH

Night of the Blood Beast (1958)
Directed by Bernard L. Kowalski.
Starring John Baer and Angela Greene.

Humanity has finally sent a man into space aboard a "satellite" (I swear to you, that's what they call it in this movie) but, on re-entry, the astronaut's craft crashes and seemingly kills its sole occupant. Or does it? A small team of doctors and scientists examine the wreckage and bring the astronaut's body back to a secret lab only to find that he doesn't seem to be completely dead! Eventually he "wakes up," only to find he is harboring baby aliens in his gut. The alien's mother shows up, kills one of the scientists and then, well... do I have to continue? Overall, the film is pretty flimsy in all the right ways. There are good classic movies and then there are "so-bad-they're-good" films. This one falls squarely in the latter category and it's all the better for it! The laugh-out-loud-bad "alien monster" costume and the unusually dark ending definitely makes this worth a viewing.  — Christopher R. Mihm
